Villa Pinciana Tilaria 2012

Here at NWM, we celebrate the long-established traditions which stretch roots back toward the beginnings of wine, but we know (our palates tell us so) that new vignaioli, maybe growing new grapes not grown there before, may also make good wine. Tuscany is among the oldest wine regions in the world, but the Maremma, in the southeast corner, bordering Lazio and the Mediterranean, is a hotbed of revival and experimentation. With a sunny, warm climate modified by cool sea breezes, it resembles California and, like California, experimental winemakers have found there a congenial home for grapes from abroad. Ilaria and Massimo, native Maremmani who left to work and returned to make wine, have found international grapes fit well into their blend .

Tilaria, though made with a high proportion of international varieties, is a distinctly Maremman wine, softened by the region’s generous sunlight. Rich and plush, dark in the glass, it nevertheless sees no oak whatsoever, being raised in stainless steel and aged on the lees. Carefully grown, hand-harvested and made in small quantities (just over 1,000 cases), it shows dark cherry, plum, and blackberry fruit softened by spices and purple flowers, and resting easily on soft tannins. Reined in by acidity and held in exquisite tension, lively and fresh as well as weighty and dark, it ends with a pleasant bitter bite.

Pairing: Pair it with beef stew or pot roast, medium-aged cheeses, or any red-sauce pasta.
