Vadio Bairrada Tinto 2009

You’ve had Bobal, Grignolino, Sheurebe, Pelaverga, Listán (both Blanco and Negro), Famoso, Centesimino, even Hondarrabi Zuri, and are searching for further ways to stretch your varietal experience. Not that we at NWM recommend obscure varieties simply for the experience, but the plethora of grapes available reminds us that wine has a long, strongly local history in many places, and that the best grapes are those grown there for generations. Barraida is a DOC, the highest designation of quality in Portugal, but has been overshadowed by the Douro Valley and Dão, but Luis Petrao shows the award is not misplaced. Its warm, inviting nose of spices mingled with red and dark cherry promises a strong, full-flavored wine, which the palate delivers. Strong but not overwhelming, the alcohol is a moderate 13%, a product of Bairrada’s maritime-influenced climate, and the blackberry and plum fruit, savory notes and baking spices are cradled in a soft mouthfeel. Prominent red cherry fruit keeps the whole lifted and lively, while the firm, well-defined tannin promise a longer life.
