Torre dei Beati Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014

Montepulciano means beautiful mountain in Italian, and, thanks to the Italian Department of Wine Confusion (which we’re convinced exists) is both a grape and a place, where the grape is not grown. (Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is based in Sangiovese.) Just to keep things nice and crystal confused, this is the grape, from the region of Abruzzo, between the beautiful mountains of the Gran Sasso (highest in the Apennines) and the Adriatic Sea. Because nothing in fine wine is accidental or unimportant, this geographic juxtaposition gives Torre dei Beati’s Montepulciano its richness and complexity. Warm day breezes from the sea help the grapes ripen; cool night breezes from the mountains keep their acidity high. A late-ripening grape that likes its sun and tends to crop heavily, Montepulciano must be tended carefully; Adriana Galasso does so organically, by hand, harvesting in several passes so that each bunch is taken at optimum ripeness. Further sorting in the winery ensures that only the best, healthiest grapes go into the wine, and it shows. Dense and concentrated, but not heavy (only 13.5% alcohol), it shows a lot of black and purple fruit: blackberry, plum, notes of pomegranate and blueberry, with red fruit and a pleasing spiciness that lifts it on the tongue. The tannins are firm and brambly, well integrated with the fruit, and the whole fills the mouth most satisfactorily.

Pairing: A perfect pizza wine, it is also fine enough to accompany veggie lasagna or spaghetti Bolognese.
