Lore Olds and Sky Vineyards are a gnomic presence on Mt. Veeder, a reminder of another way to make wine in California. Located a long way up from the Sonoma County side, not he iconic Wine Trails on the Valley floor, growing Zinfandel and Syrah instead of Cabernet and Merlot, making wines of under 14% alcohol, in their 30 vintages they have not sought to become huge, or be written up in popular publications, thinking (correctly, we feel) that making good wine will bring in clients in search of good wine. Word of purple-stained mouth has been their advertising method, and when you taste the Zin you may become one of their Bacchantic evangelicals as well.
From a cool site - Sky's vineyards, as the name would imply, are well up in the air, over 2100 feet – this is a structured, age-worthy Zin. Dry-farmed using (uncertified) organic practice, hand-harvested and aged for 18 months in mostly neutral barrique, it shows the restraint of mountain fruit and a minerally edge from its iron-rich soils. Soft and full of fruit as Zins should be, it sports plentiful acidity, plum, pomegranate, black and red raspberry fruit, spices both sweet (nutmeg, clove) and savory (sage, black and white pepper), and brambly tannin. Let it age if you're able; it will go for awhile.
