Pavillon de Chavannes Cote de Brouilly Ambassades 2015

It says something about Beaujolais that the French Government chooses them to be served at its embassies around the world: it’s an easygoing, food- and chat-friendly wine that conduces to good will between neighbors. Certainly it says something about the quality of Paul Jambon’s wines that the Quai d’Orsay chooses this cuvée to represent not just its embassies but one of its signature industries. Like many French vineyards, the hillside above Brouilly has been growing grapes since Roman times or before, imparting its distinctive volcanic minerality and touch of smoke into wines. Chavanne’s vineyards lie in the primo position near the top of the slope, giving their wines ripeness and ageworthiness, as well as a subtle dark briary tannin that given them depth and concentration, while remaining light and nimble on their feet. Spicy, as Côte de Brouilly usually is, with pepper, clove, and allspice lending softness and a sweet touch to the black and red raspberry fruit, with red currant, sour cherry, dried rose petals, violets, and an unexpected savoriness. A wine to win over all Beaujolais-haters, and to pair with your Thanksgiving dinner, an occasion sometimes in need of the diplomatic touch.

Pairing:Have it with roast Cornish game hen, as well, or seared tuna steaks with grapes and olives, or salty ham.
