Ojai Sauvignon Blanc 2014

California gold! The terroir of Santa Barbara County makes for great Sauvignon Blanc. Between the cool Pacific and the warm inland, with mountains running perpendicular to the coast that allow air to flow in either direction, nooks and expositions toward all points of the compass, it has abundant sunshine for ripening, with cool nights and breezes to keep the acidity high. Grapes can be so easy to ripen here that the challenge is keep from overproduction. Adam Tolmach green harvests to keep his yields down to half the fruit of his neighbors; the result is a wine of freshness and refinement. Light, slightly spicy, with a touch of smoke and citrus fruit on the nose, it’s a mouth-watering aperitif wine, made to quaff with friends. With white flowers, lemon zest, softened by seven months of sur lie aging to add richness and texture, hints of tropical fruit and pear skin, underneath it all a fresh completeness wrought by a delicate balance of fruit and acid.
