Montemercurio Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Messaggero 2009

Montepulciano, the “beautiful mountain,” is beautiful for many reasons – architecture, art, and history, to name just three – but for lovers of Italian wine (and if you aren’t one, you should work on that) the beauty comes in the form of a bottle, the vino nobile made from Sangiovese. Montemercurio, which takes its name from the Roman city, sends some of its best production along in this bottle, a messaggero like Mercury himself, bringing you the blood of Jupiter (Sangiovese), and from a casual sip it’s easy to see how so many Olympians got attached to this juice. Gods may attend it, but humans made it, and with hard work: organic practice in the vineyard, hand-harvesting on steep slopes, severe bunch selection, and then what is maybe the hardest work of all: waiting out the two years in barrel and one in bottle for the wine to be ready to drink. When it’s ready, though, like the ’09, the result is magical: a nose of morello cherries and savory spice, warm and brambly. In the mouth, it has both power and finesse and the ineffable wholeness of aged reds, with great sweet dark cherry and blackberry fruit, notes of baking spice and caramel nestled in savory, earthy tannins with a leathery dryness to encourage you to another glass.

Pairing: Simply made for food, have it with an eggplant lasagna, bistecca alla Fiorentina (food of the country with wine of the country!), or marinated venison.
