Jean Paul Dubost Beaujolais Villages Tracot 2015

With the boatloads of substandard, manipulated, mass-produced Beaujolais washing around the shores of Manhattan, sullying the region’s name and making people think Beaujolais is cheap, tart, and lifeless, it’s wonderful to feature the Beaujolais-Villages of Jean-Paul Dubost. A fourth-generation vigneron, Dubost proves that Gamay is a grape which shines when treated with minimal manipulation. Farming organically, harvesting manually, fermenting with natural yeasts, neither fining nor filtering, he makes the line from vine to bottle as direct as possible. You, too, will want to make the line from bottle to palate as direct as possible, perhaps with a moment to take in the nose of blueberries, black and red raspberries, and red cherries. On the palate, it is full and round, spicy and lively, with brambleberries, red cherry, plum, blueberry, and notes of briar and pepper. Twining, sinuous, with surprising complexity for a bottle at this price, it will also chill beautifully into something completely other.
