Domaine Eden Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

While Napa Valley has made itself into the signature AVA of California Cabernet Sauvignon, festooning itself with fancy wineries making oaky, ponderous, high-scoring, low-personality wines (to us, at least), there exists another, not lesser but less well-known region on the south side of the Bay Area, where wines of the distinction were produced as early as the 1860s. The Santa Cruz Mountains, home to such Cabernet luminaries as Ridge and Kathryn Kennedy, also features the Mt. Eden Vineyard of wine pioneer Martin Ray, planted in 1945. Closer to the chilly Pacific than Napa, the Santa Cruz AVA lends itself to more structured, finesseful Cabernet. Jeffrey Patterson lets the steep, cool, poor-soil vineyard speak for itself by dry-farming, limiting yields, fermenting with native yeasts, neither fining nor filtering.

A wine worth the investment of time, he ages it for two years in barrel and two more in bottle, giving its tannins time to soften and come together. A long, cool growing season made for even ripening and a classic combination of fruit, structure, and acidity. A very transparent wine of great depth, ready to drink in its youth abut willing to age gracefully if you want it to, it shows the classic Cabernet black currant, clean-structured tannins, blueberry, and earth. It is already quite together, its texture is soft and its fruit gorgeous, its tannin like a well-laid floor, its balance exquisite.
