Domaine de la Bergerie Coteaux du Layon Le Clos 2014

Chenin Blanc is the least known noble white grape, giving truly great juice only in a relatively small part of the Loire Valley. Vouvray, Savennières, Montlouis, and the Côteaux du Layon are all within a few miles of each other, and outside those few appellations, Chenin, a generous cropping grape, is generally a jug wine. Even those made to be better just make us want the gems of the Loire again. Among the brightest is Domaine del la Bergerie’s Côteaux du Layon, a long-lived sweet wine born of the botrytis that reliably visits the damp river valley, concentrating into an essence the greatness of the grape. The result is a naturally sweet wine with great acidity, richly textured, even opulent, with such a finely-tuned balance between acidity, fruit, and sweetness that it also appears weightless on the tongue. With flavors of honey and honeysuckle (the signature of botrytis), white peach, nectarine, orange citrus, nutmeg, and hazelnuts, to pick a few at random (deciding what flavors to include in the description of this wine is in itself a task), it’s a complex ride all by itself, in turns rich, lean, racy, and sumptuous, always in motion.

Pairing: Add in a custard tart with fruit, any blue-veined cheese such as Stilton, or even cheesecake, and it really gets crazy!
