Chateau des Roques Vacqueyras Hameau des Roques 2014

The Grenache-based wines of the southern Rhône Valley are some of the friendliest and most comforting in the world, and may have been what Keats was wishing to drink from his beaker full of the warm South. Certainly the Vacqueyras of Château des Roques conjures Provençal song, sunburnt mirth, and leads to a purple-stained mouth. Like all wines of place, though, behind its ultimately comforting character there is a lot of hard work. The Seroul family has worked vines here since the 1800s, and in the stony, sustainably-farmed vineyards beneath the Dentelles de Montmirail their grapes ripen slowly and evenly, the day’s heat slowly released from the rocks through the night, before being harvested entirely by hand. Rich and purple, with warm spices, plum, and blackberry, it has a depth you can easily lose yourself in – and that’s just the nose. Full and dark in the mouth, with big soft fruit upheld by solid tannins, it shows blackberry, plum, and a blanket of baking spices. With bracing red fruit and a smatch of earthiness and black pepper, it fills the mouth with a balanced pleasure. Offer it to any passing Romantic poet, and you’re sure to get a song!

Pairing: Pair it with eggplant moussaka, rare sirloin, or barbecue.
