Brooks "Janus" Pinot Noir 2013

Brooks named their flagship cuvée of Pinot Noir after the Roman god Janus, who had faces looking both to the past and future, to symbolize their dedication to organic and biodynamic farming, and their respect for the terroir which they have inherited and the land which they will pass on to their children. As farmers as well as vintners, they are deeply involved of seasonal cycles of growth, harvest, and decay, and seek to balance past, present, and future. Now holders of the Eola Hills Vineyard, home to some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Oregon, Brooks uses its fruit to make this vibrant, concentrated, balanced wine. The product of intense work in the vineyard – biodynamic viticulture of tightly-bunched, finicky Pinot Noir in the damp Northwest requires minute attention – the fruit is rigorously sorted, destemmed, and given a three-week cold soak to preserve the complex and delicate flavors. The wine emerges from its eighteen months in barrel (20% new oak) with texture and concentration; still evolving in the bottle (as it will do for some years to come), it is of the earthy, Bing-cherry style of Pinot Noir. Rich and deep, with mushroom, black cherry, blackberry, and truffle flavors up front, red cherry, rhubarb, and baking spices on the return, and lingering delight on the finish that leads to another sip, another glass, another bottle.

Pairing: Have it with roast salmon with garlic, braised lamb shanks, or tenderloin fillet.
