Alpamanta Estate Malbec 2010

Argentinian winemakers, looking to build an export presence, have made large quantities of friendly, inexpensive wine. In the last fifteen years or so, however, believers in Argentinian terroir have begun to make truly fine wine. Andrej Razumovsky, the first biodynamic winemaker in Argentina, chose the high-altitude vineyards of Lujan de Cuyo for their sunlight, low rainfall, hot days for ripeness, cool nights for acidity, and isolation from conventional growers. Alpamanta (“Love of Earth” in Quechua) is fermented with native yeasts and aged in French oak for nine months, making an intense, medium-bodied wine with a nose of dark fruit and smoked meats. In the mouth, it is full of dark fruit, with a lingering savoriness and fine-grained tannins, notes of coffee and truffle, with a gamey hint and firm acidity that lifts the fruit nicely. A natural for that pampas beef, especially grilled, it will also do well with roast pork shoulder or chorizo chili.
