Alexander and Maria Koppitsch are third generation winemakers whose vines flank the limestone shores of Lake Neusiedl, Central Europe's largest lake. Though his father and grandfather sold their wines and grapes in bulk, they imparted to Alexander a natural and noninterventionist farming philosophy that he quickly updated to biodynamic principles. His Zweigelt is hand-harvested and partially destemmed, then ferments and ages on its yeast in large neutral oak barrels. Bottled with minimal fining, filtration, and sulfur, it marries subtlety and straightforwardness with its interplay between fruit, earth, and animal notes.
