Al Cantara Muddichi di Suli Terre Sicilliane Red 2012

In our eight thousand years of winemaking, much effort has gone into discovering, creating, and fostering new strains of the fruit that ferments so magically, and figuring out by trial and error where they grow well. Here at NWM, we (and you) are the beneficiaries of these millennia of experimentation, and we regularly have the pleasure of tasting a new grape from a new place. One of our recent favorites is the Nerello Mascalese grape, which thrives high up in the volcanic soil of Sicily’s Mt Etna.

Al-Cantàra’s vineyards are located 2000 feet up on the northwest slopes, facing away from the strong sun and letting the grape develop its acidity in the cool nights. Hand-harvested and aged in stainless steel to preserve the acidity, it is nimble and medium-bodied, with a beautiful robe and nose of spices and brandied cherries. With a combination of red and dark cherry, smoky minerality (the soil it grows in was lava not so long ago), earthy spices, and elegant red-fruit acidity, it is lively and pungent in the mouth, a ticklish wine made to go with the savory/sweet combination of Mediterranean food. With notes of brandied cherries, hibiscus tea, and warm, savory tannins, it takes a long time to finish.

Pairing: It will pair well with lamb with couscous and dates, duck breast with pomegranate sauce, or caponata (Sicilian eggplant stew).
